A school day in Buhoma

Our dear visitors, I greet you all in the name of Jesus Christ. My name is Immaculate, a senior four student. I want to give you a short note about how a regular school day looks like. We have different ways of schooling in Uganda, day schooling and boarding schooling.

Day education is where the children study and they go back home. Boarding school is where children study and stay in school.

I am a day school student and get out of bed at 6:00 am and first do domestic works like sweeping the compound around the house, mop the floor and wash the utensils to prevent diseases from our homes. This is what we are taught in school and that way we teach our parents, guardians how to promote sanitation and live a long life. We warn people by holding meetings about the dangers of poor sanitation and how to promote personal hygiene in the community.

I also milk the cows. Then I start preparing for school. I bath, brush my teeth and comb my hair and I iron my school uniform.

School starts at 7:30 am up to 5:00 pm. I have four lessons per day and each subject has its own teacher who arranges it in such a way that the students can pass exams.

At school I learn multiple things like English, which helps me to talk to different people from abroad. And mathematics, chemistry and biology. I also get lessons on how to escape dangers in case I get lost. I am learning how to live in a clean environment to prevent me from getting diseases in our community.

When school is over I go home and do more domestic works or I go to the child centre where I can dance and sing with my friends.

Thank you and thank you for supporting Bwindi Children Skills Centre.

May God bless you.
